To Tangata Whenua o Te Moehau, residents, landowners of the northern Coromandel, MEG members and other interested or affected parties

Moehau Environment Group will no longer actively pursue their Pest Proof Fence project just north of Colville.

However, MEG still believes that the fence is potentially the best tool with the current technology, for achieving the vision of a possum, mustelid and feral goat-free environment in the northern Coromandel.

MEG will continue with its other pest control, conservation, and public awareness programmes. These include: the Port Charles Rat Attack and the Translocation of Species project; the MEG Kiwi Sanctuary; possum control throughout the northern Coromandel area; The Wet Rat Waikawau Estuary project; The Summer Programme; our brochure series and our various other research and educational projects.

Points of clarification:

v     Moehau Environment Group wishes to publicly state that the MEG coordinator has earned, on average, $17.50 per hour while carrying out paid duties, not the $65/hour as claimed in the media.  In addition, he spends many of his days off volunteering for MEG.

v     No application for funding has been sent to any organisation for $1.2 million (or similar amount) toward the pest proof fence construction, as claimed in the media.

We would like to thank all those people who have actively supported MEG and given generous donations over the last three months.

We look forward to working with all landowners on the control of possums, mustelids and feral goats in our area.

Signed

Moehau Environment Group Committee.
